Becky: If you don’t read Daniel the Dinglenuts site then I’ll give you a brief summary of what he did: He ripped off Brent’s layout, posted a very dramatic post about how he didn’t rip anything off and it was just inspiration and in general just made a fool of himself (as he almost always does). We’re here to award him with the Biggest Dinglenuts in the Universe award, oops did I just give away a spoiler?
Sarai: If you did, I ain’t telling. I’m pretty sure we’re not the first ones to express our annoyances about Daniel — it seems like we got there a little late judging by that last entry.
Becky: Judging by his past entries he’s quite the little shit disturber. Sarai would you please hold my weave? It’s time to give him his trophy.
Sarai: Sure thang, bbdawl. I have to say, Daniel’s crime is a very common one. It’s not entirely fair to point him out, but since he decided to talk about it, why not use him as a prime example?
Becky: Exactly! Let this be a warning to all of you other offenders out there, we’re watching you. Hopefully you’ll learn something today. Now we both realise that there is nothing original about anything anymore and everything has been done. That’s not what is up for debate here. What is up for debate is that Daniel ripped off Neonglow.net in a very significant way and figured that it was okay so long as he credited somewhere on his site. I say that is not right because the current layout bears a striking resemblance to Neonglow’s last layout.
Sarai: Sure does, and he’s not the first. The point we’re trying to make with Daniel here is that just crediting someone does not give anyone the right to blatantly rip off someone’s creative ideas. Daniel’s attitude is: “Stop telling me that I copied, I clearly credited my source, duh, just look! Now you can stop telling me!” Uh, no. That’s not how it works. Crediting is not a free pass.
Becky: If you were inspired by Brent then that is fine, I’ve had to stop myself from stealing a few of his layouts and setups! But if I were going to make something that looked similar, very similar, I would shoot off an email asking if it was okay first, because that is called common courtesy and, no, linking someone does not allow you to do whatever you want.
Sarai: Not only that but “inspiration” and “stealing” are too very different things. I shouldn’t come across a layout and automatically think of another one. This article explains it very well.
Becky: I love, love, love how he tries to put the blame on everyone else!
If people were smart enough and actually took the time to look around my site they would see in the DOMAIN SECTION >> CREDITS that I have CLEARLY added a link to the persons site where I got IDEAS/INSPIRATION from.

Trashed.nu’s owner seems like a jerk, but I don’t think that what he did (in regards to Brent’s layout) is that big of a deal. He obviously copied, but as long as he didn’t rip Brent’s code verbatim or his graphics… *shrug * It’s annoying, but it’s also equally annoying when people get crazy about their intellectual property and their ideas.

I’m an ASP.NET programmer, and as such do coding (both HTML, CSS as well as C#) for a living. I’d be pissed as HELL if someone like you decided to copy the coding I worked on for months, just because HTML, CSS and C# can be used by anyone.

Tracy from Jebelle didn’t get away with anything. Brent wrote a blog entry that was pretty harsh about it. However, Tracy dealt with it in a mature way and Brent was more than happy to let her use the structure.
Please explain to me how I am two-faced. The only thing I can think of that’s remotely two-faced is when I included Brandy’s use of my rainbow when I posted on Snark about you. But that’s not two-faced. That’s me being pissed off that someone used something I made without asking first. Brandy was really good about it though and I had no qualms letting her use it. Attacking someone’s design, though not very nice, is one thing, attacking who a person is is another. I’m glad the owners of this site realize this, though this whole thing upsets me. If this were me, I’d still be crying right now.

Though to some it might just be “stupid e-drama”, and Becky and Sarai do this for amusement and for other’s amusement, when it gets out of control like this post did (with certain people’s comments) it can really hurt someone. I recently wrote a rather complex piece of javascript functionality, to fit one of my client’s needs. It took me two weeks to get it right. You can bet that the client will not be pleased if anyone copies that. For the record, I wrote it from scratch.
There is an extent to which you can legally copy code. If it’s common enough like say, using a list to make a horizontal menu, obviously, this is perfectly acceptable because EVERYONE does it.
You don’t have to always write code completely from scratch. That’s the whole point of code libraries, to reuse code. Don’t reinvent the wheel. The difference there being that someone said, yes, OK, you can use this for whatever you want.
I got a 0 on a programming exam once because I said, I wrote this code, but I took the idea for how to declare this shared memory from this site. The real problem was that I wasn’t specific enough and didn’t show what part of my code I used the other site’s idea for. Once I did that I got full credit.
Did Daniel copy, I have no idea, I didn’t see either of the layouts, but it’s not a black and white issue is my point, though I don’t think I explained it very well, lol.
While I admire Brent’s layouts very much, being very creative, it’s not extremely “original”. I wouldn’t exactly say he’s the inventor of the single column layout. Many can be found all over the web for pre-made Wordpress themes.
With this said, I will admit that the resemblance between Daniel’s layout and Brent’s old layout are very similar. Daniel did link to http://www.jebelle.net which I think is funny due to the fact that the owner very clearly has Brent’s link at the footer of her page while he hides it on a subpage that I had to hunt down in order to find.

@Danielle. It may seem like just the internet but copyright laws still apply. Have you seen the many lawsuits that occur on dA by artists because visitors think because it’s the internet it’s a “free for all”?
