The IP Challenge
EDIT: We have all of the participant submissions we need, thank you so much to those who applied. If you’d like to be a guest judge, there is still time to submit an application. Participants: Keep a look out for the first challenge!
Sarai: Well guys, we have a new project set up that we’re really excited about. We hope you guys will enjoy participating and watching it unfold. I’m so fucking pumped for this, you have no idea.
Becky: Sarai’s been running all over the place putting together details, arranging prizes, making lists and putting up with my fuzzy self. I’m pumped too, beyond pumped. I can’t wait to see some of the entries we get and what people come up with.
Sarai: Me neither me neither. So basically what this is is a Webdesign Competition (!) specifically designed to see how creative, original, and resourceful you (as participants) can be. It’s fun to put together, fun to participate, and fun to watch how the competition goes, so I think this is clearly a win-win situation.
Becky: And unlike other website building competitions, you actually have to make something good! So it might take you a little longer than five minutes to throw something together.
Personally I’m looking forward to talking about the entries and setting up the winners gallery. * rubs hands together * I love me some time to tinker with HTML and new concepts. Really though, this is Sarai’s brainchild and baby, she came up with pretty much everything (I was shocked by how thorough her email to me was. Shocked).
Sarai: LOL, Well I was excited! There will be challenges posted every week with specific instructions and tips. Most challenges will require you to re-create certain existing websites and make them your own, while other challenges only require you to use a specific image or color scheme. Plus we have some fabulous prizes! We tried to think of prizes that would entice people to actually participate.
The grand prize winner will receive (so far):
- Custom logo made by Brent of Neonglow.net for your website.
- Opportunity to nominate an IP candidate and guest review on IP.
- Your own Winner’s Gallery here on IP showcasing your designs. (Good for portfolios!)
- Your website will be plugged for a month on our sidebar. Free hits!
- The title of The Best Webdesigner Evar.
- Domain and hosting for a year.
- Our love.
Becky: Excited doesn’t even begin to describe her. I’ve never seen her get this excited by something that isn’t food.
Sarai: Oh hush. Please please participate, we have 1 more slot open! We need eight participants in order for us to carry on the challenges so tell your friends and submit an application! More information can be found below. There are no special requirements (unless you want to be a guest judge) so don’t worry about credentials or experience! This is to explore your creativity and range as a webdesigner, and it’s designed to be fun!
About
At the beginning of every week we post a challenge complete with specific instructions and guidelines. At the end of the week we will judge your designs based on creativity, originality, and execution.
Every week a poll will be put up where visitors can vote on their favorite designs. The results of the poll will have certain influence over our scoring, although it won’t be the deciding factor. The participant with the highest score will be declared a winner, and is granted immunity for the next challenge. The person with the lowest score is unfortunately out.
The two remaining participants in the competition will compete in the Final Challenge. The winner of this challenge wins the competition and gets the Grand Prize, as well as all of our love.
Guidelines
- You must work on your own, not in teams or partners.
- You have one week to complete the challenge.
- Website development and design must be your own work.
- You must put a copyright notice on your footer.
- Coding must be Valid XHTML and CSS.
- Be original and creative with your design.
Participants
Note: Each challenge requires you to make a homepage layout and design. It must look as legit as possible. You don’t have to create subpages; you can create “fake links” and other information that is required for a homepage instead. For example, in the Google-esque Search Engine challenge, your search form does not have to function, but it must look as legit as possible.
If you’re going to use stock photography or any other graphics, please use legal resources and credit accordingly. Please do not remove any of your completed designs, as we will possibly need to take screencaps for the Winner’s Gallery or judge your past designs to make our Final Decision.
In order to submit your designs, you must either:
- Create separate directories in your existing domain or host on a friend’s, or
- Create an account on freewebs.com.
Application for Guest Judges
Participants must e-mail their applications (or comment on this entry with the info listed below) in order to participate. There are 3 spots open to guest judge. This number could change, however, so stay tuned for more details.

How long have you been designing/coding?
I would guesstimate 3 years of stuff just sitting around on my desktop. It wasn’t until September 2007 that I actually opened a site, though.
What is your favorite thing about webdesign?
Just picturing something good in my head and then focusing on implementing it. I love playing around with coding until it all works.
What is your least favorite thing about webdesign?
It’s annoying when things don’t come out the way I want them to. It’s also frustrating to see all the amazing designs out there and know that I may never be anywhere near as good.
What do you hope to get out of this challenge?
Some fun, some experience :)
