Rilla of Appassionato is going to be judging this round with us!

Name: Jacky
Website: Dubious.nu
Layout: Jacky’s Entry

Sarai: I thought Jacky used the colors the most creatively. They are still there, but they just look right, as if she thought to use that color scheme from the beginning. I would’ve have liked to see the footer be a little more creative, maybe a shape on the bottom right or something like that, but still very good in my opinion.

Becky: I have to agree with you, I would have liked to see something that set the layout a little more apart (aside from the atrocious colour scheme). After seeing the header with the stripes and then scrolling down to the bottom, well that was disappointing. It feels kind of “incomplete” to me. This truly was the best use of the horrible, horrible colours provided. Well done!

Rilla: I like how the colours have been used in the top part of the layout. But because the top part is good, it creates a contrast (and not a good one) as I scroll to the bottom because here it becomes plainer and the text is really blinding against the dark blue. Another thing is the use of the different font for “Welcome to Dubious”. Since it’s not so much bigger than the blog entry title, it just looks like
you’re using too many fonts even though there are only two. Ergh and link hovers are blinding too.

Name: Raina
Website: Lemon Lime
Layout: Raina’s Entry

Becky: Next up is Raina’s layout which I was quite disappointed with. I felt as though she used the basic template from her first layout (for the IP home page challenge), dropped the sidebar, changed the colours and the header and called it a day. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing, but it looks awfully similar to her first layout.

Sarai: I agree, I saw the similarity, but I think she tried her best to switch it around. Maybe she was running out of time? I love the chocolate bar idea, and the navigation, but I’m a bit confused about the powder blue background. That color wasn’t available in the color scheme.

Becky: Yeah I noticed the background too and I originally thought my memory was playing tricks on me. But I did like the chocolate bar, I liked it lots. I could use some chocolate right now, Sarai go get me some chocolate.

Rilla: The illustration is nice and cute. I think you were trying to get away from the yucky colour scheme by hiding certain colours beneath a more eye-pleasing colour scheme. This looks nice initially but creates (1) blinding link hovers and (2) weird rollovers on the top navigation tabs. I personally think hover effects are supposed to make the link stand out more than its original state rather than just look different. I don’t think the pink looks more eye-catchy than blue on
grey. I find the footer part cute too but not exactly matching with the main layout.

Name: Anne
Website: Aurorean
Layout: Anne’s Entry

Sarai: Maybe later. Next is Anne, who received the most votes in the poll. My first instinct was “Ew that background color and header color is not wise,” but then I remembered that’s the color scheme we suggested. I still would’ve rather seen the dark blue as the background, however.

Becky: I’m not sure anything could save it…. It is the worst colour scheme I have ever seen and I really have to extend my sympathies to the contestents for having to use that colour scheme, I’m just looking at the layouts and I already have a headache.

Personally I don’t like the gradient with the stripes at the top, it looks odd being cut off for the pattern and the header is a tad on the boring side (it’s also 1px lower than the stripey background). I do love the navigation though, it’s pretty.

Rilla: I really like this. I like the simple header, the background of the navigation boxes and the background of the page. We all know the colour scheme is nothing other than disgusting, and it’s been used really well in this layout I wouldn’t think the scheme is yucky at all here.

Name: Kaylee
Website: Reliquesce
Layout: Kaylee’s Entry

Sarai: Speaking of gradient’s, Kaylee’s entry had a very interesting background gradient. I agree, the color scheme was harsh, but I felt that it could have been worked with. I was a little confused by the header, I don’t know if there’s an image missing at the top or if it was on purpose. I’m not crazy about the site title either.

Also, I felt the navbar was a bit bland and plain. It could’ve have been a little more spruced up.

Becky: Kaylee’s was not my favourite this round the colour scheme could have definitely been better used (as demonstrated by Jacky). I really, really dislike the blue to reddish brown gradient and the stripes, not to mention the mirrored effect on the title. The navigation seems oversized and in comparison to the rest of this over-the-top layout the hover for the nav seems bland and not noticeable.

Rilla: No. Just no. The thick pink at the bottom of the footer is okay but in the header is um… big NO. Pink and neon aqua? If the pink at the top goes away, it’d be a good layout. Also there’s a lack of styles i.e. for links colours. It’s really simple and plain and… boring. :/

Challenge #4

This time you have to completely redesign the homepage of Lissa Explains into something that is functional, pleasing on the eyes and accessible. The homepage you design should look like a tutorial website and remember that the links don’t have to point anywhere. You are free to choose your own colour scheme and setup, otherwise refer to the rules below.

As always upload your finished work into a subdirectory on your website and don’t forget to include a footer with your information on it.

Um… so who won this round, and who gets out? Or… did I miss something here?

Oh LissaExplains: this will be interesting. :)

Seriously. WHO WON?!?

I’m sure this one will be easy. Anything has to be better than that ugly yellow background. I want to know who won too. Did I miss something as well, lol.
