Challenge #1 Judging & The Second Challenge

Now that we’ve seen the poll results, it’s time for judging. We deliberated privately, but we felt we should explain a little bit of what we though of each entry:
Name: Kaylee
Website: Reliquesce

Please note that Becky takes offense to the police(wo)man in the image. She claims to not be that fat, she’s probably lying though (however, Sarai may very well be, we haven’t found a camera large enough to fit all of her in yet). It’s covered in blue! Far too much blue and the purple title doesn’t contrast enough with the blue shades. The search warrant thing is cute, so is the ruler and the screenshot setup. Overall this layout, while being creative, falls a little flat because of the colour scheme and font chosen for the header, they’re a little generic.
Name: Ramsha
Website: Crystal Chaos

The colour scheme on this, in Becky’s opinion, needs work. The green, the cream, the blue and the purple do not mix well. Aside from that (and one other little oopsie) the layout isn’t bad! It’s got a good base and even though the screenshot for the articles is next to the welcome message and not the articles, it’s still pretty good.
Name: Jacky
Website: Dubious.nu

Nice, but it resembles a generic template and it seems like it was designed for a business website instead of a more personal one. The header colours don’t seem to fit together, red and blue? However, the screenshot setup is nice and we love the rounded corners and shading. Great work.
Name: Raina
Website: Lemon Lime

We agree that the colour scheme and cop hat are super cute and that’d we’d steal them any day of the week. The rest of the layout seems busy and undersized, though. Overall the layout is cute, perhaps too cute, a little busy and it’s a tad on the small side. That being said, we still liked it because it does have a fantastic colour scheme and cop hat (oh lawd we love that cop hat).
Name: Anne
Website: Aurorean

We’re both in agreement that this is our favourite out of all the entries so far. The sidebar colour would do better either more beige coloured or a darker in our opinion. Maybe a less saturated brown, something to draw the attention in because most of the layout is light. The only complaints we have are that it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table and the stars are simply asterisks, not a graphic. Because of the setup we have, we need an image for our ratings, not text. Overall the base is really great, we loved it.
Name: Chien
Website: Qiann-Yu.net

The layout, while pleasing, doesn’t really scream Internet Police. The lack of colour, aside from a bright blue, is bothersome because the layout really needs it, it’s pretty bland. Typography wise we’ve seen better, the alignment of the typography in the header and the odd tracks leading up to it both seem off (however, the magnifying glass is a nice touch).
And now for the winner! The winner of the first challenge was Anne. We felt your design was simple, but looked like something that could easily be integrated on IP. Congratulations! As the winner, you have immunity for the next challenge.
However, this is a competition, and unfortunately there must be someone out. Chien, I am sorry, but your original design lacked a footer and that was one of the requirements. We also felt your design didn’t express any creativity from you as a designer. We enjoyed your logo, but we needed a bit more. Thank you for participating, it means a lot.
And now for the Second Challenge.
Challenge #02: The Google Challenge
- Design a homepage for Google.com.
This challenge requires you to make a homepage layout and design for Google.com. If you could re-create the legendary Google.com homepage, how would you go about it?
It must look as a legit homepage. You do not have to create subpages or a functioning search form (all of you followed this pretty well, you’re on the right track). Your final submission should be an index file and a CSS file, if applicable. Accessibility and simplicity is imperative for this challenge. Think of Google and its easy-to-use format, and keep it in mind as you design.
Requirements:
- You must work on your own, not in teams or partners.
- Website development and design must be your own work.
- You must put a copyright notice in your footer.
- Coding must be Valid XHTML and CSS.
- Be original and creative with your design.
- Do not delete your design, as we might need to look over it in the future.
For more information, please look over the IP Challenge post.
Resources:
Good luck! Your designs must be submitted by noon (your noon, whatever it is) on February 14, 2008. If you’d like to submit to noon our time (EST), you can check the Timezone Converter. To submit a design, you can e-mail either of us privately with a link to the web directory you were required to create.
If you have any questions, you can post them below in a comment.
I thought that Anne’s was really good. Though it looked simple, it was obvious that the coding was complex. Furthermore, it screamed Internet police layout (for me). Also, Raina’s looks alot like neonglow.nets – maybe you’d want something more unique?

I never suspected that Anne would be the winner, to be quite honest. I didn’t think her design, although nice, wasn’t creative enough. But you two are the final judges, so that’s your call. I can’t wait to see the results of the next challenge.
